A few years ago, overcrowding at an Idaho jail forced authorities to come up with a quick plan to house more criminals.

The result was a parking-lot-sized complex made of specially-made tractor-trailers to house female inmates in Canyon County.

But the trailer complex, officially called Pod 6 but also dubbed the Jailer Trailer Park on social media, is going away and officials are working on coming up with a new plan. A more permanent plan.

Pod 6 was plagued with issues including liability concerns over maintenance with ‘shower pans, mold, water, HVAC, and sewage’ according to the press release from Canyon County. There were also safety concerns related to contraband and the design layout.

Another issue was the fact that the units were being leased rather than owned by the county. Many people saw this as a massive waste of taxpayer money.

Now that the temporary facility is going away, the county needs a new plan.

In the press release, issued on February 21, 2025, it was announced that the contract with ADS (the company providing the trailers) had been terminated earlier in the month.

Canyon County is now ‘now considering a long-term solution to accommodate future growth as the Treasure Valley expands.’

One plan is to begin construction of a new women’s facility in phases on the 26-acre Pond Lane property in Caldwell.

For more information on the project, residents are invited to an open house on March 20th from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Canyon County Public Administration Room. Officials will also meet on February 24th to discuss Pod 6.
