Why Are People Changing Their Profile Picture On Facebook To A Black Box With A Blue Stripe

I have seen quite a few of these today and it got me wondering. Why are people changing their profile picture on Facebook to a black box with a blue stripe through it?

The best answer I could find online was that is is out of respect, support, or to remember someone in law enforcement who has been killed.
